HBO and its streaming service HBO Max took home nine awards at the Emmys 2021. The Mare of Eastown went away with four wins, while Last Week Toning won two. Hacks scored around three awards, while I May Destroy You took home a single award. Apple TV+ also had quite a showing in the awards ceremony, with four wins for Ted Lasso. ViacomCBS tallied two from RuPaul’s Drag Race, along with an election special from Stephen Colbert. Disney and NBC both scored a single award each.

The Emmys 2021 was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, who opened the night with a karaoke tribute of Just a Friend by Biz Markie, where he was aided by LL Cool J, Lil Dicky, and Rita Wilson. The audience for this gala show included around 500 nominees, who joined in on the fun, clapping and singing along. The energy level was at an all-time high, especially when Ted Lasso bagged two awards consecutively, which led to emotional speeches from winners Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham.

The Emmys 2021 took place at the Live Event Deck in Los Angeles instead of the Microsoft Theater, which has been the place for all Emmys since 2008. The relocation of the place was necessary due to the pandemic, which allowed guests to sit at small tables instead of rows.
