Horwich artist holds her first exhibition at Breakdown Bolton

AN artist who works closely with a group who promote mental wellbeing through creativity is displaying her work at an exhibition.

Jade Smethurst, from Horwich, creates highly detailed drawings and specialises in pet portraits, having studied fine art and photography at Runshaw College.

But she also works closely with Breakdown Bolton, a not-for profit arts group which helps people dealing with mental health issues.

Now the organisation is hosting an exhibition of Jade’s work at St Andrew’s Court in the town centre.

Although art started out as a hobby for Jade, earlier this year she launched her page Jade Draws and started selling her artwork - now she is completely self-employed.

The 24-year-old said: “I’ve always been a creative soul and I’ve been very interested in creating from a young age. At college I studied different forms of art and photography including charcoal pieces, print making, portrait photography, landscape photography and mixed media.

“Mixed media art was where I really thrived and and I always felt accomplished and proud with the finished piece.

“Since college, I fell into working full time and lost my way for a while. But then I started drawing friends’ and family’s pets for birthday and Christmas gifts.

“It was with help from my friends and family that I started to post my drawings online and I got more and more people wanting to purchase one.

“I started Jade Draws and decided I was going to try and make a living out of what once was a hobby.”

Jade, after putting on several creative workshops, added: "Laura from Breakdown got in touch to see if I would be interested in running a workshop for people who had experienced mental health issues. I was more than interested as I’ve experienced mental health issues myself. I can’t thank Breakdown Bolton enough for giving me the opportunity to hold my very own exhibition and I am beyond excited to see where this could take me.

The exhibition is on from August 7 to 13, from 11am to 5pm.
