  • Kennedy gets the first goal after the restart and the margin has been trimmed to 28 points with 14:14 left in the game, 6.6.42 to 10.10.70.

Kennedy becomes the Eagles’ second multiple goalkicker along with Cripps.

Melbourne and West Coast are back out on the ground and have resumed their positions in readiness for the restart of play.

The Demons lead by 33 points with 15:52 left in the game, 10.9.69 to 5.6.36.

The game will recommence in approximately 10 minutes, according to the AFL.

Below is the rule outlined in the AFL rules relating to a lightning delay:

    11.1.2 Incomplete Match
If a Match is unable to commence or continue within the time scheduled for the Match for reasons beyond the control of either Team (including circumstances where it is unsafe for the Match to proceed), the following shall apply:

    (a) Match not commenced: The result of a Match which is unable to commence for reasons beyond the control of either Team shall be determined by the Controlling Body.

    (b) Prior to half time: If a Match has commenced but is not able to proceed at any time prior to half time, the Teams shall depart from the Arena. If the Match is unable to recommence within a 30 minute period, the Match shall be deemed to be drawn and the scores of the Teams at the time the Match was interrupted shall be used in calculating the percentage of each Team.

    (c) Half time & beyond: If the half time interval has been reached and the Match is unable to proceed at any time, the Teams shall leave the Arena, or in the case of half-time, not return to the Arena. If the Match is unable to recommence within a 30 minute period, the scores of the Teams at the time the Match was interrupted shall be deemed to be the final scores of the Match. The Team with the highest score shall be deemed the winner of the Match and the scores shall be used in
calculating the percentage of each Team.

    (d) Match not able to proceed: Unless otherwise determined by a Controlling Body, a field Umpire shall, having regard to the health and safety of the Players and any other relevant circumstances, determine whether a Match is unable to commence or proceed. A field Umpire must determine that a Match is unable to commence or proceed for such time as lightning is present at or Within the Immediate Proximity of the Arena where the Match is being conducted, in line with the AFL Extreme Weather Policy outlined in the Member Protection Policy.

    (e) Recommencing of Play: Where a Team is directed to recommence play by a field Umpire and the Team fails, refuses or neglects to recommence play, the Team shall be deemed to have forfeited the Match, in which case Law 11.2 shall apply.

    (f) The Controlling Body may vary the length and scheduling of the intervals to suit practical circumstances.

Ben Brown keeping warm during the lightning break, as he should. Melbourne won’t want him twinging a hamstring after his superb three-goal performance tonight. He looms as a serious weapon for the Demons in the finals.

Under the lightning rule if the game can’t recommence in 30 minutes the result stands as it is now - a 33-point win for Melbourne.

How about this. There is lightning in the area so the game has been briefly stopped with 15:53 left in the game.

Melbourne still in front by 33 points, 10.9.69 to 5.6.36.

Hard to see the Eagles coming back into this now after that power-packed third term by the Demons, who kicked five goals and really put their hosts to the sword.

The Demons go bang with the last four goals of the game to take a commanding 32-point lead at three-quarter time.

West Coast were gallant for a quarter or so, but the big gulf in class between the two sides has been laid bare now.

Despite having fewer inside 50s (30-31), the Demons have played these conditions magnificently, and have been far more efficient with seven more scoring shots (18-11).

The visitors are also on top in hitouts 24-19 and clearances 23-22.

    West Coast 2.0, 4.5, 5.6 (36)
    Melbourne 4.2, 5.3, 10.8 (68)
