  • The Saints got the jump on the Cats with the first five goals, but the hosts gradually reeled them in and eventually got the game on their terms in the second half to end up winning by 14 points.

Meanwhile, St Kilda’s finals dream is all but over now.

In the end the Cats smashed the Saints in disposals 400-295, contested possessions 143-107, clearances 41-30, marks 110-75, inside 50s 46-42 and hitouts 45-23 while they also won the tackles 55-52, free kicks 26-23, scoring shots 20-16.

Meanwhile, at Adelaide Oval, Port Adelaide have kicked 17 goals in a row to lead Carlton by 84 points with 6:20 left in the game, 19.13.127 to 5.13.43.

An utterly shambolic performance from the Blues, especially in Marc Murphy’s 300th and final game.

It’s incredible to think that they actually led the game by 23 points in the second quarter.

The Power have five multiple goalkickers: Dixon 4, Fantasia 3, Marshall 2, Georgiades 2, Gray 2.

Cameron collects the loose ball and puts the result to bed with his fourth goal of the game, which puts the Cats up by 14 points with 1:51 left in the game, 13.7.85 to 11.5.71.

Henderson pumps the ball deep into attack where Dangerfield takes a crucial contested mark against Wilkie. What a grab from the superstar.

The Brownlow Medalist plays on and snaps truly from point-blank range to put the Cats up by eight points with 3:16 left in the game, 12.7.79 to 11.5.71.

Dangerfield is having a massive game with 28 disposals (22 contested), nine clearances, seven score involvements and now an extremely crucial goal.

Dangerfield crumbs the pack but his rushed shot on goal from the pocket goes the wrong side of the goal post.

With 6:58 left in the game, the Cats lead by just two points, 11.7.73 to 11.5.71.

Geelong are fighting to shore up a top-four spot while the Saints are battling to keep their season alive. Stakes don’t get much higher than this!

Hawkins could find himself in hot water with the MRO after tackling Joyce to the ground and driving the Saint’s head into the ground in the process.

Joyce left the ground in a groggy state and has since been subbed out and has been replaced by Clavarino. That can’t help Hawkins’ cause.

It’s now just a one-point ball game with 8:35 left in the contest, 11.5.71 to 11.6.72 in the Cats’ favour.

Sharman gets one back for the Saints after marking strongly against Henry and dobbing the set shot from 20m out in front.

With 10:13 to go in the game, St Kilda trail by just two points, 11.4.70 to 11.6.72.

Sharman joins Membrey, King and Crouch as the Saints’ fourth multiple goalkicker.

Geelong get the all-important first goal of the final quarter with Hawkins converting a lovely snap set shot from the pocket to put the Cats up by nine points with 13:51 left in the game, 11.6.72 to 10.3.63.

It’s not over yet, but the Saints wouldn’t want to give up the next goal, otherwise their task will be made a lot more difficult.

Hawkins joins Cameron on three goals for the Cats.

Carlton have just waved the white flag, which is a real shame considering its Marc Murphy’s 300th game.

Port Adelaide have now booted the last 10 goals to take a commanding 41-point lead heading into the final quarter.

After jumping out to a 23-point lead in the second quarter, the Blues have just stopped, scoring 0.4 to 10.8.

The hosts are now convincingly winning the disposals 330-281, contested possessions 121-102, inside 50s 48-32 and free kicks 14-6 and are also on top in clearances 29-28, scoring shots 23-17 and hitouts 31-25.

    Pt.Adel 2.2, 8.6, 12.11 (83)
    Carlton 2.6, 5.9, 5.12 (42)

    GOALS
Pt.Adel: Marshall 2, Dixon 2, Bergman, Boak, Georgiades, Fantasia, Lycett, Wingard, Gray
Carlton: Honey 2, McGovern, Kennedy, Casboult

    DISPOSALS
    Pt.Adel: Boak 25, Byrne-Jones 25, Amon 23, Wines 23
    Carlton: Walsh 28, Kennedy 21

The stage is set for a grandstand finish down in Geelong with just two points separating the Cats and Saints.

Menegola and Dangerfield, in particular, stamped their authority on the contest in the third term to help their team grab the ascendancy.

Geelong are now dominating the disposals 285-232, contested possessions 106-80, clearances 30-22, marks 73-61, inside 50s 36-24 and hitouts 35-16 while they also lead the free kicks 20-17 and scoring shots 15-13.

It’s been super comeback from the Cats who conceded the first five goals, but the job is not done yet and the Saints are still well and truly in this contest.

    Geelong 2.0, 6.2, 10.5 (65)
    St Kilda 5.1, 7.2, 10.3 (63)

    GOALS
Geelong: Cameron 3, Hawkins 2, Stanley, Menegola, Close, Simpson, Smith
